The Korean title, “Pokssak Sogatsuda“, is a phrase in Jeju dialect meaning “You’ve worked hard.” Rather than taking the literal translation for the English title, they choose “When Life Gives You Tangerines”, a nuanced yet clever twist on the familiar saying, “when life gives you lemons,” substituting tangerines as a meaningful acknowledgement to Jeju’s famed crop. Such careful consideration of language and symbolism illustrates the creators’ deep sensitivity to the narrative, setting, and audiences.
